Trainer interviews from Thursday.
Larry Benavidez, assistent trainer for Sadler:
Larry told us that Musique Toujours (entered in The Jewel, race 9) had gone from a 12 Sheets number to a 2 (lowest numbers are fastest races). So in order to avoid a bounce after a big new peak, they laid the horse off. So here's a stable that spots horses using The Sheets. Furthermore, he told us that the reason for the big improve was that Musique had been mired inside in all his prior races, tugging and uncomfortable, and that in his last he raced freely away from the rail. Hence his big 104 Beyer. Cal horses have won the last 3 Jewels.
Scott Lake:
As for Satan's Code (7th race, RAPID TRANSIT)
Lake says he bought the horse and then supplemented him because he was impressed with his rapid improvement. This is a 6-year-old who broke his maiden ... as a 6-year-old!!! But look at his rapid improvement. Being so lightly raced, he is most eligible to improve in a very contentious field. Lake was also asked about his rider choice, since his go-to guy, Flores, is on Sure You Can and not Satan's. Does Flores have automatic first call? Usually but not always. An owner can intervene, and also, they can make another choice according to which rider fits. In this race, Satan's Code gets Canterbury's leading rider, Derek Bell.
David Van Winkle:
Chisholm, Race 5, the EXPRESS.
His 1:10 final time, which equals the four other contenders, was first flashed on the board as a 1:07 and change. The toteboard quickly changed it to 1:10, but some insiders believe the time was faster. In fact, you can put a blanket over our 5 contenders in this race, but Chisholm his highest in the ML at 6-1.
Van Winkle explains that this horse should be near but not on the lead and that having been on the lead in a duel two races back was the reason he was all out to win that day, also in 1:10.
It's late Thurs nite, and I'll be back on the backside tomorrow morning at 6:30. If I pick up any info that would affect the lines, I'll do another post. If not, no need to post.

Race 9, THE JEWEL
Cramer:
Musique Toujours and Spooky Mulder BOTH bettable if above my 3-1 assessment.
I see these two as equal. California horses have won last 3 Jewels and that favors Musique. Spooky is sprint speed versus route pressers, and has a pace advantage.

Dear C&X friends,
I just lost a lengthy posting. It's past deadline, I'm putting in 18 hour days, what with backside interviews early morn and night racing.
I'm gonna give you my lines as well as those of Today's Daily Digest's Steve Fierro. Check the Canterbury Park website for my extensive comments. I've talked to trainers and riders, and dug deep for nuanced info. With odds lines, we play the contenders who go off at above the line odds.
Race 4, IRON HORSE
Cramer:
Gram's Folly, 5-2
Rough Draft, 7-2
Strike Reality, 5-1
Tanqueray, 6-1
Fierro:
Rough Draft, 8-5
Tanqueray, 7-2
Strike Reality, 4-1
I'm posting this and will send remaining races on a second post, just so I don't spend 2 hours again and lose the whole thing.
